For instance, the metabolic health solution employs a new Lactobacillus brevis strain, backed by clinical data for its metabolic health and blood sugar management functions.
The Chinese probiotic sector, which began about 40 years ago, is now facing increased competition. Brands are responding by adding more strains, increasing CFU counts, or using a greater variety of strains. According to WPIC data, 90% of gut health probiotics sold on Tmall are high-dose formulations with over 10 billion CFUs, and over 70% feature more than nine strains.
However, Dr. Susan Jin, vice president of IFF Health Sciences APAC, believes that the industry should return to the fundamentals of safety, stability, and scientific evidence for sustainable growth. She stresses, "Science is still key and brands should stick to the three key fundamentals of probiotics, namely safety and using strains that comply with regulatory requirements, as well as ensuring the strains’ stability and efficacy."
IFF has conducted clinical trials involving specific populations like infants, children, women, and the elderly to develop formulations suitable for these groups. Dr. Jin also emphasizes the importance of communicating scientifically-backed health functions to consumers, avoiding exaggerated claims that could undermine trust. She suggests making the science "tiktokable" to ensure consumers understand, remember, and can easily share the information.
