Mammoth Mystery: Unveiling Myfanwy's Secrets | Ancient DNA & Diet Analysis (2026)

Imagine a time 15,000 years ago, when a mammoth named Myfanwy roamed the lands of Anglesey. This discovery has sparked curiosity and controversy, and we're about to dive into the fascinating story behind it.

Scientists have been analyzing small samples from Myfanwy's tooth root, aiming to uncover secrets about her life. They want to know her age, what she ate, and the environment she called home. But here's where it gets intriguing: the ancient DNA testing is still underway, and it might just reveal a surprising twist.

Barry Hillier, a trustee at the museum, shared that the DNA results, currently being analyzed in Sweden, could determine Myfanwy's gender. "We gave it a Welsh name, Myfanwy, assuming it was female. But we might have jumped the gun!" he exclaimed.

Dr. Neil Adams, a fossil mammal expert, described the dating results as "very interesting." According to Adams, Myfanwy is part of a select group of mammoths that repopulated Britain after the Last Glacial Maximum, a period about 20,000 years ago when the ice age was at its coldest.

"Myfanwy's discovery is significant because she's not just the first of her kind from Wales; she's also the oldest, giving us a new understanding of when woolly mammoths returned to Britain," Adams explained.

The findings also paint a picture of Anglesey 15,000 years ago. The presence of mammoths suggests the ice sheet had melted, allowing grasslands to flourish. Tests on Myfanwy's tooth reveal a diet of grasses and plants from open, treeless lands, known as steppe.

Nitrogen analysis indicates a moderately moist environment, possibly with fewer large herbivores competing for food. The heavy wear on her teeth suggests a tough diet, and scientists estimate she lived to be about 32, which is relatively young for a woolly mammoth, typically living up to 70 years.

So, what do you think? Is Myfanwy a female or a male? And what does this discovery mean for our understanding of ancient Britain? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
