The world of electric vehicles (EVs) is a competitive arena, with brands constantly vying for the top spot in terms of battery health and longevity. A recent study by a Swedish used EV marketplace has shed light on this very topic, revealing some surprising findings. While battery degradation is a concern for many potential EV buyers, the results of this study suggest that it may not be as severe as commonly believed.
The study analyzed data from 9,954 battery health tests conducted between 2022 and 2026, with the goal of determining which models retained the highest capacity after 62,000 miles. The top three performers were the Kia e-Niro, Hyundai Kona, and Kia EV6, all of which retained over 95% of their battery capacity. Interestingly, these three models were all manufactured in South Korea, suggesting a potential advantage for Korean-made EVs in terms of battery health.
One thing that immediately stands out is the strong showing from Tesla, with four of its models appearing on the list. This is particularly notable given the common perception that Tesla batteries are prone to degradation. In fact, the study reveals that Tesla's battery health is generally quite good, with the Model 3 and Model S retaining over 92% of their capacity after 62,000 miles. This is a significant finding, as it challenges the notion that Tesla batteries are inherently inferior to those of other brands.
However, it's worth noting that the study also highlights the importance of battery chemistry and manufacturer. For example, the Polestar 2, which uses a CATL battery, retained 94.35% of its capacity, while the same model using an LG Chem battery retained only 93.53%. This suggests that the choice of battery manufacturer can have a significant impact on battery health and longevity.
So, what does this study really suggest? For one thing, it indicates that battery degradation is not an inevitable outcome of EV ownership. While some models retained only 91.7% of their capacity after 62,000 miles, the majority of the models tested retained over 90% of their capacity. This is a significant finding, as it suggests that EV batteries can maintain their health and performance for many years to come.
In my opinion, this study is a welcome development for the EV industry. It provides a much-needed dose of reality to the often-hyperbolic discussions around battery degradation. While there are certainly challenges and issues to be addressed, the results of this study suggest that EVs can be a reliable and long-lasting investment. As the technology continues to evolve and improve, we can expect to see even better battery health and longevity in the future.
